About Me
Life on the Island
My name is Darci Leggatt, and I currently work in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Summerside, Prince Edward Island as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). For the past 6 years, I practiced in primary care and carried a 800-patient practice as an independent clinician. My time in primary care was extremely valuable and the amount of knowledge I gained as an NP prepared me to go back into my passion of acute care. I was an ICU and Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse (RN) for 8 years before transitioning to family practice as an NP. As much as I loved being an acute care RN, I felt like I could have more of an impact on my community as an NP.
As an NP, I firstly advocate for my patients and family, but I also advocate for this unique and rapidly growing profession. I take great pride in my career and feel like NPs have a significant impact on the way that health care is delivered in Canada and the positive role we have on the everchanging complex health care system. As I carry on with my educational journey with the Master of Health Studies, I hope to have a continuing impact on the way NPs are integrated into the acute care setting in PEI and to advocate for our role in patient care.
